(ATLANTA - October 26, 2006) The Atlanta Regional Commission, as the Area Agency on Aging for the 10-county region, and the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) Division of Aging Services will hold a public hearing to hear from older adults, family caregivers and service providers on current and future service needs for older residents. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8 at 3 p.m. at the Helene S. Mills Multipurpose Center, 515 John Wesley Dobbs Ave., Atlanta, GA 30312.

ARC is soliciting input from the public for the development of the 2008-2011 Area Plan on Aging. The area plan identifies what services are needed and how they will be delivered in the 10 counties of the region – Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale. ARC contracts with nearly two dozen county-based and specialized agencies to provide a continuum of home and community-based services. Older citizens and their families have many options, including information and referral services, case management, transportation, home-delivered meals, senior centers, legal services and more through this network of care.

The hearing in the Atlanta Region is one of 12 DHR is holding around the state to get consumer input for 2007 State Plan renewal. The State Plan outlines how Georgia will meet the requirements of the Older American’s Act and addresses goals and objectives in reference to service delivery, strategic planning and funding. The Older Americans Act identifies four priorities for the plan:  increase the number of older people who have access to an integrated array of health and social supports; increase the number of older people who stay active and healthy; increase the number of families who are supported in their efforts to care for their loved ones at home and in the community; and increase the number of older people who benefit from programs that protect their rights and prevent elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Anyone not able to attend the November 8 hearing may send written comments until 5:00 p.m. on November 30, 2006 to jkauffman@atlantaregional.com For more information, call the Atlanta Regional Commission at 404.463.3239.
