Aging and Community Design
How our communities are designed can dramatically impact an individual’s ability to age in place.
- As driving becomes more of a challenge, walkable communities are essential.
- As physical and health needs change, neighborhood-based housing options are critical.
- As individuals live longer, communities that promote health and active lifestyles are more important than ever.
- As more older adults live alone and grow frailer, neighbors and friends must be close by to ensure safety and security.
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has worked with a number of communities throughout the region to remove barriers to aging in place. Most recently, ARC assisted Cobb County as that community passed a senior housing ordinance.
